Future Made in Australia legislation & renewable hydrogen

The Federal Budget 2024-25 is set to invest $22.7 billion over the next decade in the Future Made in Australia plan. This plan is focused on maximising the economic and industrial benefits of the transition to net zero – securing Australia’s place in a changing global landscape.

With supply chains under pressure, increasing fragmentation, and intensifying global competition, new opportunities in the clean energy industry are set to shape the future of the global economy. Our critical, abundant natural resources and skilled workforce make Australia well-positioned to strengthen vital supply chains in the transition to net zero.

The Government’s “Future Made in Australia” plan is essential to this transformation.

The goal of this plan is to:

  • encourage and facilitate private sector investment

  • make Australia a renewable energy superpower

  • add value to our resources and strengthen economic security

  • back Australian ideas: innovation, digital, science

  • build a strong, diversified, resilient economy powered by clean energy

  • invest in people and places (such as by creating secure, well-paid jobs delivering benefits throughout the country).

As part of this plan, the Government has introduced the Future Made in Australia Act to parliament, establishing a National Interest Framework to identify priority industries and investments.

How does the Future Made in Australia plan relate to renewable hydrogen?

Renewable hydrogen is the flagship of Australia’s net zero transformation. It opens the door to green metals, such as iron, steel, alumina and aluminium, and other applications critical to industrial decarbonisation.

Organisations focused on hydrogen innovation and technologies, such as Endua, will play a key role in enabling distributed, on-site production of green hydrogen – making it possible to produce hydrogen where it is needed, when it is needed.
